Sarcoma – Types and Early Warning Signs
Sarcoma refers to a specific type of cancer that can affect different parts of the body. It is more of a general term used to describe a broad group of cancers that develop in the bones and their soft tissues. This is known as soft tissue sarcoma, which originates in the tissues responsible for connecting, supporting, and surrounding the body’s structure and organs.
Mentioned below are the types of sarcoma and their early warning signs:
1. Chondrosarcoma
This is one of the rarest types of cancer that generally affects the bones, but it can also develop in the soft tissues located near the bones. Some of the most common places that chondrosarcoma develops are in the hip, pelvis, and shoulder region. The warning signs of chondrosarcoma are palpable mass or swelling, developing pain, or even weak bones that could possibly lead to fractures.
2. Angiosarcoma
Angiosarcoma is a rare type of cancer that develops in the lymph vessels and blood vessel linings. A person’s lymph vessels are responsible for collecting bacteria, waste products, and viruses from the body to dispose of them. This type of sarcoma can form anywhere in a person’s body; however, it is most known to develop on the neck, skin, or top of a person’s head. The early warning signs of angiosarcoma include a lesion, which looks a lot like a bruise, swollen skin, a lesion that is steadily growing in size, or an area of the skin that turns purple, similar to a bruise.
3. Liposarcoma
It refers to the type of cancer that develops in the fat cells. It is commonly known to be a type of soft tissue sarcoma. Since liposarcoma develops in the fat cells, it can affect any part of the body. However, it is most known to affect the muscles of the abdomen or limbs. Although liposarcoma can affect an individual at any given stage of their life, it is most commonly known to occur in old age. The symptoms of liposarcoma depend on which part of the body has got affected. If the liposarcoma has formed in the abdomen, then the early signs would be abdominal swelling and pain, constipation, bloating, and finding blood in the stool. If the liposarcoma is located in the legs or arms, the early warning signs would be swelling, pain, weak limbs, or a lump under the person’s skin.
These are some of the early warning signs of sarcoma. Please note that there are more than 70 types of different sarcoma, and the symptoms and treatment would vary and depend on its location, type, and stage.
