IUDs, female condoms, and diaphragms are other types of birth control options that are commonly used. 1. Outercourse
Outercourse involves intimate activities not involving penetrative sex. It is a common form of birth control that is highly effective. Outercourse prevents the contact of sperm and egg, thus preventing fertilization. However, outercourse, for some, may include oral and anal sexual activities. While it does not lead to prevention, it can still result in the transfer of sexually transmitted diseases.

2. Withdrawal
Commonly known as “pulling out,” withdrawal is a possible birth control option for men. During this procedure, the male participant withdraws the penis from the vaginal orifice before ejaculation. This prevents the sperm from coming in contact with the egg. The success rate of this method isn’t high as it is difficult to be followed consistently. Additionally, withdrawal does not stop the transfer of sexually transmitted infections.

3. Condoms
The condom is the most common method of birth control among men and women. Its popularity and preference are based on its ability to prevent contraception and the transfer of sexually transmitted infections. Condoms are easily available and can be used along with other methods of birth control.

Pregnancy is sometimes possible despite having used a condom. The possibility arises due to an error in its usage or in its form. Although being highly effective at preventing pregnancy, condoms can fail to do so when used incorrectly. Mistakes like improper storage, putting it on incorrectly, or tears or punctures in the condom can allow small amounts of male ejaculate to pass into the ovum, which may lead to fertilization. Therefore, when relying on condoms as a birth control method, ensure that it is stored and used correctly. One should also ensure that it hasn’t passed its expiry date.

4. Vasectomy
One of the most common methods of birth control among the male population is vasectomy. The procedure entails surgical sterilization in men, which has proven to be highly effective. The procedure is considered permanent but can be reversed in a few cases. After a vasectomy, the chances of pregnancy are known to fairly decline. It depends on the time since the vasectomy was performed — the longer this period is, the chances of pregnancy are less.

In a vasectomy, the vas deferens, which is the tube that transports the sperm from the testicles to the penis, is cut and sealed. This leads to the elimination of sperm-less semen from the body. The body eventually absorbs the sperm, and the procedure leaves the patients sterile for conception. Vasectomy is considered to be a low-risk procedure but poses certain side effects. These may include swelling, bruising, and bleeding. One of the major drawbacks of this birth control option is that it does not prevent the transfer of STDs.
