3 Early Warning Signs and Symptoms of Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancers are common in women and may display no symptoms in early cancer or pre-cancer stage. In most cases, the signs may not even begin to show until cancer has spread to nearby tissues. Learning about the early warning signs and symptoms of cervical cancer can help in the timely detection and treatment. Read on to know more.
1. Abnormal vaginal bleeding
Irregular bleeding is one of the most common tell-tale signs of cervical cancer. It usually happens between menstrual periods, after sex, or after douching. In some cases, you may notice spots in the vaginal discharge that you may dismiss as harmless. However, it may be a sign of something more serious. So, it is better to get tested in case of abnormal bleeding.
2. Pelvic pain
Even though pelvic pain can mean a lot of things, this is mainly indicative of cervical cancer as an early warning sign. If you persistently feel pelvic pain, then cancer may have already spread to other tissues. Moreover, pelvic pain is a sign that cancer has already progressed to advanced stages.
3. Smelly vaginal discharge
While vaginal discharge is normal in women, a foul-smelling, pale liquid isn’t. If cervical cancer lacks oxygen, then some cells may die and infect the tumor. It is this infection that causes the foul-smelling vaginal discharge of watery consistency or mixed with blood.
Symptoms
1. Burning or itching in the vagina
Constant discharge of cervical mucus can cause vaginal itching or burning sensation, indicating that something is not right with the vagina. If you experience discomfort as a result of itching, then consider meeting your gynecologist for an exam.
2. Lower back or abdominal pain
If you face constant back and abdominal pain, even outside of your menstrual cycle, then it may be a cause of concern. Lower back pain is often associated with issues in your reproductive organs, such as the cervix. It is advisable not to overlook an inexplicable lower back pain as a sign of fatigue.
3. Frequent urination
Cervical cancer can cause blockage in your kidneys. This blockage will cause frequent urination that often becomes uncomfortable as well as difficult. You may even feel the constant urge to use the washroom, even if you pee a little on each trip.
Many women suffering from cervical cancer don’t recognize the disease in its early stages because it doesn’t show symptoms. Moreover, the early warning signs and symptoms of cervical cancer may occur due to several other reasons. However, you are recommended not to take these signs lightly and visit your doctor if you have one or more of these symptoms. Denying yourself timely treatment allows cancer to grow to a more advanced stage, making it much harder to treat.
